2010 Pica Print Junior Super Six
The 2010 Pica Print Junior Super Six took place at Porritt Park on Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8. After 148 games and over 1000 points scored HSOB / Burnside Blue played Harewood Red in a repeat of the 2009 Girls final and for the Boys it was Carlton Redcliffs up against Harewood Red.
Harewood Red with a goal difference of 119 and HSOB / Burnside Blue 89 were clearly the strongest teams on the Girls side – though both had been made to work hard for wins over a very strong Marist defence.
After a scoreless first half Harewood Red took the early lead in the second hald with a well executed penalty corner, which was followed by a couple of near misses including a shot off the post. With six minutes to go HSOB / Burnside Blue came back strongly with a field goal to go up 3-2. The final goal by Girls' Player of the Tournament Grace Curtis, two minutes from time, sealed the game 6-2 – a repeat of the 2009 result. Stand out players for HSOB / Burnside Blue, along with Grace, were April McLennan and Alice Batt – for Harewood Red Sophie Radonovich and Katherine Lobb had big games, along with their team MVP, keeper Greer Thomson.
The boys competition was a round robin with a straight final that saw Harewood Red top the table by one point from Carlton Redcliffs, with Selwyn – Sydenham two points back in third. Selwyn-Sydenham could consider themselves unlucky not to be in the final after drawing with Harewood Red in a tense game earlier in the day.
That draw allowed Carlton Redcliffs into the final and the opportunity to redeem themselves after taking a heavy loss 23-3 from Harewood Red the previous day.
In what was an extremely exciting final with the lead changing several times it was the Carlton Redcliffs side that came through as deserved winners 9-6. Sam Dawson and Matthew Cummmins had strong games for the Harewood Red team. For Carlton Redcliffs, Corey Paterson and Antony Thomas were always threatening on attack and once they hit the front resolute defense from Dominic Bain and goalkeeper and Boys Player of the Tournament Sean Poulsen made sure they remained there..
