2012 U18A Girls Winners of NZ Premier Girls National Tournament
The Canterbury Hockey Association (CHA) selects two representative teams at the Under 18 Girls' level each year.
The 2013 Under 18 representative program has seen some major changes with the Hockey New Zealand Under 18 Premier Tournament shift to the Under 18 Regional Tournament to align with the National Hockey League and National Under 21 Tournament.
The Canterbury region includes the following associations: Canterbury, Mid Canterbury, South Canterbury, Malvern and West Coast.
All players who are under 18 as at 1st January 2013 and are registered participants of the above associations are eligible for the Canterbury Regional Under 21 Men's and Women's teams.
The other major change to the 2013 Under 18 representative program has seen the Hockey New Zealand Under 18 Championship Tournament now moving to the National Association Under 18 Tournament.
As a result, all players who do not make the Canterbury Regional Under 18 representative teams would then be eligible to trial for their respective association Under 18 team eg. Canterbury U18, Mid/South Canterbury U18 and West Coast U18. These teams will compete in the Hockey New Zealand Under 18 Association Tournament.
The Under 18 A Girls' team is the highest team at this level, with the best players at the Under 18 level selected to contest the Hockey New Zealand Regional Girls' National Tournament. The philosophy in selecting this team is to pick a group of players that collectively have the best chance of winning the Under 18 Girls' national title. However, there is still a development focus to the team and in attempting to achieve a national title it is expected that all players in the team receive a reasonably equal amount of game time so that all players experience high level competition and can continue along the high performance pathway in the future.
The other team selected is the Under 18 B Girls' team and is selected on the basis of identifying talented players that are not ready for the A team just yet, but are likely to make that team in a subsequent year or have the potential with further development to make the Under 21 team in the future. The focus of this team is therefore development and all players selected will receive reasonably equal game time at the Hockey New Zealand Under 18 Association Tournament. In some instances players from the Under 15 level who miss selection in the Under 15 A Girls' team and that it is believed would gain more benefit from playing against slightly older opposition may be offered the opportunity to play for the Under 18 B Girls' team as opposed to the Under 15 B Girls' team.
Player eligibility stipulates a player may turn 18 in the year of the tournament, but anyone who is older than this (i.e. turns 19 or older in the year of the tournament) is not permitted to play.
