First Round, Sunday 23/8/09, 11:00 am.
Played at the H Thompson Badminton Centre, Hobart, 12 courts, lower ceiling than our players are accustomed to and a concrete base floor with a Plexi pave surface.
Victoria vs Western Australia
The first round saw many players debuting for Victoria’s Clendinnen Shield Team. Andrew Paulet was first in the 2nd men’s singles against WA’s Eddie Hung, Andrew after 3 very close fought games went down 21-19, 21-23, 19-21. Erica Pong and Renuga Veeran won their games in straight sets against Elaine Wong and Liesha Cooper. The next singles saw Luke Chong in his first game for Victoria coming up against WA’s number one and former UK international player Nick Kidd. Luke was undaunted by the task giving Nick two very hard sets before going down 14-21 &13-21. The final singles saw Erin Carroll and Glenn Warfe win in straight sets.
First women’s doubles Renuga and Erin won in straight sets as did Ben Walklate and Glenn in the first men’s. Ann-Louise Slee and Jessica Lyons had an easy win 21-6 & 21-10. The second men’s doubles was a struggle from start to finish before the WA pair of Nick Kidd and James Greenhouse overcoming Luke and Andrew 16-21, 21-12 & 16-21 (the team felt that Andrew liked the courts with the amount of time he was spending out there!)
The three mixed all went our way, in the first Nick Kidd got a shock with Renuga playing with brother Raj, getting his smashes back and then attacking him.
Match score Victoria won 10 points to 3 points, 22 to 7 games, and 574 to 402 aces.
Second Round, Sunday 23/8/09, 6:00 pm.
Victoria vs Queensland
Our second match started similar to the first with the girls winning and the men fighting hard but going down to their more experienced opponents. The coach Ashley and the team believe that a singles win is just around the corner for Luke and Andrew. In the third men’s singles Raj Veeran showed his opponent Eric Chan that he is not only a doubles and mixed player but has a singles game as well by winning 21-13, 21-10, Erin Carroll won the third women’s singles in straight sets.
Victoria now asserted their authority on the match by winning the women’s and men’s doubles in straight sets. Luke and Andrew joined the winning list playing together in the second men’s doubles.
These results were again repeated in the Mixed with again the Victorian pair’s all going through in straight sets.
Match score Victoria won 11 points to 2 points, 23 to 4 games, and 531 to 339 aces.

The second men’s doubles saw Raj Veeran and Ashley Brehaut together for the first time, after grabbing the first set the Vic pair looked the goods but the Tasmanian pair of David Jones and William Ponsonby had other ideas and took the second set. The experience and doubles skills of the Victorians prevailed winning 21-16, 17-21 & 21 -15,
Victoria again showed their supremacy in the mixed by taking the 3 mixed in positive play. Jessica and Raj were extended by David Jones and Leesa Grundy when Tassie took the first set but then Raj and Jess took control running out winners 22-24, 21-9 & 21-15.

Fourth Round, Monday 24/8/09, 6:00 pm
Victoria vs New South Wales
Luke Chong, Erica Pong and Renuga Veeran again started the team off well, but Stuart Gomez gave NSW a chance with a three set win over Victoria’s Ben Walklate, 12-21, 21-18 & 21-19 this hard match could be what is needed to help Ben reach his peak. Andrew Paulet won his first singles defeating Vincent Ng 21-9 & 21-18, Jessica Lyons after an exhaustive first set against Belinda Chung went on to win 23-21 & 21-15.
In the doubles Ann-Louise Slee and Erin Carroll playing first women’s doubles for the first time had a good win over NSW’s Spoorti Rattan and Catherine Tjoe. The men’s doubles went to Victoria in straight sets. The second women’s doubles was a hard fought match but the attacking play of Jessica Lyons and Erica Pong overpowered the NSW’s pair of Lynn Duong and Belinda Chung 21-13, 21-19.
Even though the result was beyond doubt Victoria’s mixed combinations didn’t let up taking the three mixed in straight sets. Renuga and Raj Veeran, 21-10, 21-10, Erin Carroll and Glenn Warfe 21-5, 21-8 and Ann-Louise Slee and Luke Chong 21-11, & 21-10

Tuesday night we play South Australia the other undefeated state in what should be a close hard fought tussle.
Fifth Round, Tuesday 25/8/09, 6:00 pm,
Victoria vs South Australia
The match against the two undefeated teams started in great style with Victoria’s Erica Pong overcoming the very experienced Kate Wilson-Smith 21-17 & 21-17, Erica had too much court coverage for her taller opponent. SA quickly fought back when Milin Parikh after a close tussle overcame Glenn Warfe 21-15 & 21-19. With the game evenly poised Renuga Veeran took on the reining singles champion Leanne Choo, but Renuga was well and truly up to the task winning 21-10, 21-14. The first men’s singles was a titanic affair, Ben Walklate against SA’s number one Chad Whitehead. Ben took the first set 22-20, Chad then came back to win the second 21-16, but then Ben the Victorian co-captain grabbed the win with a 21-12 final set. Raj Veeran and Erin Carroll Victorias other co-captain, put Victoria ahead with straight sets wins in the final two singles, Victoria 5 to 1 up after the singles.
South Australia not lying down came back in the first women’s doubles with Kate Wilson-Smith and Leanne Choo beating Renuga and Erin 21-17 & 21-17. Victoria then came back when Glenn and Ben trounced Chad Whitehead and Vincent Choo 21-5, 21-5, The Shield then went into Victoria’s safe keeping for another year when Raj Veeran and coach/player Ashley Brehaut winning the second men’s 21-12, 21-12, over SA’s Milin Parikh and Heng Lee. In the second women’s doubles Erica Pong teamed with Anne-Louise Slee to defeat Talia Saunders and Katie Wilczynski in three hard fought sets 18-21, 21-13 & 21-18, Victoria 8 to 2 with the mixed to go.
South Australia won the first mixed after a three set struggle, Chad and Kate overcoming Glenn and Erin 21-16, 19-21 & 21-15. The second mixed again went in SA’s favour when Milin and Leanne defeated Luke Chong and Ann-Louise Slee 21-16, 24-22, Luke and Ann-Louise playing second against a proven pair acquitted themselves very well. Last mixed saw Andrew Paulet and Jessica Lyons playing very attacking mixed to down the experienced pair of Heng Lee and Talia Saunders 21-10, 21-16.
