U17 teams secure World Championship berth
The Australian U17 Men’s and Women’s basketball teams have qualified for the 2012 FIBA U17 World Championships, after both sides defeated New Zealand in game two of the best of three FIBA Oceania Championship.
In the women’s game, the Australians sealed the win 75-50, while the Aussie men were dominant in their match-up, streaking away to a big 38-point win, 86-48.
The Aussie women put together a 17-8 opening period and looked to be in command of this contest, before New Zealand returned fire, dropping 20 points in the second period, while holding the Aussies to just 12 points, bringing the early Australian lead back to just one point at the half.
But things turned around immediately again in favour of the Australians, as the Kiwis could only add four points in the third period to Australia's 20, taking a 17 point lead into the final quarter, eventually running away 25 point victors.
For the Aussies, Vanessa Panousis was dominant finishing with 24 points, while Tiana Mangakahia added 19 points.
For New Zealand, Stella Beck was again impressive, finishing with 17 points, while Penina Davidson finished with 10 points.
In the Men’s match-up, the Aussies came out of the gates strongly against their trans-Tasman rival, building a big 16-point quarter time lead. Although better in the second quarter, New Zealand were unable to make up ground, the lead remaining the same heading into half time.
The Kiwis remained defiant in the third period, but the Aussies slowly pulled away again, building a 21 point lead going into the final term before running rampant late, putting together a 24-7 final term to run away with the 38-point win.
For the Australians, rising star Dante Exum was again impressive, finishing with 18 pooints while Mirko Djeric added 15 points.
