2012 Emus and Gems squads named
Basketball Australian has named the 16 male athletes and 16 female athletes who will make up both the Emus and the Gems Australian U19 Basketball squads.
The athletes will take part in a series of camps as they work towards selection for the teams who will represent Australia in the U19 FIBA Oceania Championship later in the year, the qualification series for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.
Among the talented group of Emus players includes AIS scholarship holder Darcy Harding, Emmett Naar, who was named in the 2010 FIBA Oceania Youth Tournament in New Caledonia, along with Dane Pineau, who is the son of former NBL import Brad Pineau.
Their season begins 1 March when they will take part in a four-day camp at the AIS (1-4 March). The group’s second camp will be held 10 – 13 May followed by the third camp between 14 - 17 June.
The final selection camp will be held 20 - 23 August, where the final team will be named before the group heads to New Zealand on 17 September for preparations for the FIBA Oceania U19 Men’s Championship.
Leading the Gems will be Carley Mijovic, current AIS player and WNBL rising star, along with fellow AIS scholarship holders Mikhaela Donnelly, Stephanie Talbot, Casey Samuels and Alex Wilson.
Camp one for the Gems will be held 2 - 5 march. The girl’s will then get six weeks break before Camp two tips off on 26 - 29 April. The Gems then go into Camp three between 26 - 28 May before heading to France in June to participate in international tournaments.
Following what will no doubt be an exciting trip for the group, they then move into their own selection camp from 20 - 23 August before heading to New Zealand on 17 September.
Both the FIBA Oceania U19 Women’s and Men’s Championships will be held on 20 - 22 September.
