2012 U18 AJC & Kevin Coombs Cup: Day 4
Day four of competition saw a number of teams still undefeated, some teams still looking for their first win, and others looking to jostle for high positions ahead of finals. Here’s how the results ended up.
U18 Men’s Competition
NSW Metro continued their unbeaten run on day four of competition at the U18 AJC, defeating WA Country 87-47. For NSW Metro, Nicholas Duncan registered another double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, whole for WA Country, Brendon Canzirri finished with 14 points. [Box Score]
Next up SA Country and VIC Country did battle, and it was the VICs who were victorious, wining the match-up 71-48. For the VICs, Matthew Parslow finished with 16 points, while George Blagojevic dropped 15 points. [Box Score]
Queensland South had a very convincing win over the ACT running away winners by 97-55. Joshua Derksen is another player who has impressed this week thus far and this game was no exception. He finished with 18 points for the contest, while Iain Morison had 13 points for the ACT. [Box Score]
Like NSW Metro, VIC Metro kept their winning streak well-and-truly alive with a big win over Tasmania, dominating every quarter to win 88-39. For the VICs, Ben Simmons (10 rebounds) and Jeremy McKay both finished with 14 points each while for the Tassie side, Joe Chilcott was the only double-digit scorer with 10 points. [Box Score]
Still searching for their first win, the Northern Territory were not going to be able to secure one in their game against WA Metro, giving up a 28-10 first quarter, which blew out to a 103-39 victory for the local side. For the West Australians, Jack Fletcher recorded 26 points and 14 rebounds, while for the NT, Daniel Clee and Stefan Yamada both finished with 8 points. [Box Score]
To finish off the day, NSW country faced off with SA Metro, who couldn’t recover fully from a 24-14 opening stanza, the NSW side ultimately winning 86-75. For the winners, Brock Dries finished with 23 points while Jack Turnbull top-scored for the SA team with 19 points. [Box Score]
U18 Women’s Competition
VIC Country Women faced off with Queensland South in a thriller. It was the QLD side that took the narrow 71-67 victory. Tiana Mangakahia top-scored for the Queenslanders with 20 points, while for the VICs, Annie Blackburn had 23 points. [Box Score]
A low-scoring final term gave WA Country an 11 point win over New Zealand 66-55 on day four. For the WA Country team, Annie Ducas had 24 points, while for NZ, Monique Renee Hornby top-scored with 14 points. [Box Score]
In one of the most see-sawing games of the tournament NSW Metro defeated ACT 76-40. The ACT came out of the blocks hard early and took an 18-6 first quarter lead. Then NSW delivered a 23-2 second quarter. They extended in the third again, before holding the ACT to just five points in the fourth to run away with the win. For NSW Metro, Vanessa Panousis had one of the biggest games of the tournament, dropping 36 points including 7-8 from down town. For the ACT, Claire King finished with 13 points. [Box Score]
Next up Vic Metro faced the NT, who, minus a second quarter slump, were competitive with the VICs, but the reigning champs were still too strong and ran away 80-51 winners. For the VICs, Amanda Meinking finished with 24 points, while Lauren Flanegan finished with 12 points for the NT. [Box Score]
WA Metro defeated Tasmania convincingly in front of a home crowd 7-53. Samantha Roscoe top-scored for WA with 16 points, while Elizabeth Howe dropped 17 points for the Tassie side. [Box Score]
Queensland North could only manage five points in the opening term of their clash with NSW country, and despite a late fight, they were unable to claw back, going down 62-51. For the NSW Country team, Georgia Ohrdorf finished with 17 points, while Keely Froling had 15 points for the QLD side. [Box Score]
Queensland South however enjoyed a massive victory over ACT, running away with an emphatic 81-30 win. For the Queenslanders ALeisha Myers finished with 16 points, while for the ACT, Sophie Anderson finished with nine points. [Box Score]
In the penultimate game of the day, VIC Country and WA Country did battle, with the VICs securing the 72-49 victory. For VIC Country, Annie Blackburn backed up her impressive game from earlier in the day to register 16 points, while for WA Country, Paris Duffield was almost a lone hand on offense, finishing with 19 points. The final clash of the day saw the NSW Metro team defeat SA Country 64-50. Vanessa Panousis backed up her huge game earlier in the day to drop 23 points for NSW, while Georgia Green delivered 13 points for SA Country. [Box Score]
