The GirlZ Just Wanna Have Fun Series is going Regional
19th September
Hockey Central Victoria – Bendigo is going to host an U11 GirlZ Just Wanna Have Fun event from 10am - 11:30am on Saturday 22nd September in Bendigo. The event will take place prior to the U17 JSC which is being held in Bendigo over that weekend. This is a great opportunity to play other girls in a 6 aside quarter field competition. It is also an opportunity for families that may be already coming up to watch the championships to enter their daughter in this event or alternatively a team of girls that want to play hockey in the morning and then watch the older boys and girls play in the afternoon.
The event will be run in the same way as the metropolitan series with 4*15 minute games.
The event is free and all participants will receive a Women & Girls pink t-shirt.
Closing Date: Wednesday 19th September 2012, 5pm

Congratulations to Hockey Victoria's Female Umpires
30 July 2012
Congratulations to two of Hockey Victoria’s Women & Girls Umpire scholarship holders for being selected to umpire at the U13 Girls National Championships in Perth in September.
Katie Tong lives in Bairnsdale and plays for Swan Reach. She is 17 years old. Katie has umpired at the club and association level of the past 4 years. Her goal this year was to become a better umpire and be able to teach others to umpire.
In March 2012, Katie was accepted to become part of the inaugural HV umpire scholarship program for 14-20 year old girls. As part of the program, all girls completed the Level 1 umpire theory, the online test and were assessed if it was deemed appropriate. Katie attended professional development sessions with Keeley Brown where rule interpretation and how to work with other umpires were discussed. Katie then umpired at the Junior Country Championships where she was considered proficient enough to umpire at the Junior State Championships (JSC). During these championships, she was given specialised umpire coaching from some of Victoria’s more experienced umpires. Katie was assessed by Elaine Dunk whist umpiring at the JSC and achieved her Level 1 umpire accreditation. She was also rewarded for her success by being chosen to umpire the U15 girl’s final.
As is her love of umpiring and showing leaderships skills, she has recently taken on the job of Umpire Coordinator for East Gippsland Association (at their request). Part of the role has required her to assist a number of juniors and seniors to improve their skills and confidence in readiness for achieving their community level accreditation.
Now to top off a fantastic year, Katie has been appointed as one of the umpires to officiate at the U13 National Girls Championships in Perth.
Emma Nangle is 16 years of age and plays for Doncaster. She has represented Victoria as a player, in both indoor and outdoor competitions in 2009, 2010 and 2011. Emma has ambitions of wanting to umpire at the National level.
In March 2012, Emma was also accepted into the HV Women & Girls umpire scholarship program. Once again she achieved Level 1 accreditation, umpired at the Junior Country Championships and was selected to umpire at the Junior State Championships (JSC). The umpire panel were very impressed with her and as a result Emma was given the opportunity to umpire the U13 JSC Girl’s final and then nominated to umpire at the U13 Girls National Championships in Perth. All her hard work has paid off and she has been selected as one of the umpires to officiate at this event.
Congratulations and we wish both girls all the best during the championships and into the future.

Women & Girls Coaching Scholarship Program
As part of the Woman & Girl’s coaching scholarship program the young female coaches are involved professional development sessions with experts in specific fields. On July 4, all coaches in the program were invited to a skills based session with Katie Allen (Head VIS Women’s coach). During this session they were shown a number of innovative drills that they can take back and use with their own teams and Clubs.
This was followed by a PD session with Kylie Thomas (VIS Sports Scientist) where they were introduced to different forms of sports science and technology. They discussed
• the importance of hydration and how to measure it,
• testing – beep tests, yoyo tests and sprinting test
• technology such as Sportscode, and various apps available “swimcoach”
• use of ipads, ipods for videoing and immediate feedback.
They then had the opportunity to see how the technology worked in action.
Following this session, the girls had the opportunity to go and hear the pre-match brief given to the U21 girls team prior to their game against the VIS Senior girls team. The purpose of this was to hear how coaches of elite teams prepare players for a game, hear the strategies and structures used to combat the opposition. It was also useful for the girls to hear how other coaches approach players, how they use interchange and how they communicate with players.
Of the nine girls involved in this years coaching scholarship program, 8 are playing a role as coach, assistant coach or apprentice coach at this years Junior State Championships. Once again they are being exposed to new kids, new parents, and new ideas. It is a wonderful learning experience for them all. This is a fantastic professional development opportunity for all girls and I wish them all the best with the championships.

Female Youth Leadership Program 2012
On Sunday 17th June all participants of the Female Youth Leadership Program were invited to a networking brunch where they were given the opportunity to catch up with fellow participants, hear how the volunteer projects were progressing and enjoy the excitement of an ANZ Championship League Netball Match - Melbourne Vixens vs West Coach Fever.
Hockey Victoria (HV) has supported seven young girls (aged 15 – 19 years) in this program. Ellie Patterson, one of HV’s participants spoke on behalf of the girls about what they are doing to increase the participation of women and girls within their own clubs. Some have taken on coaching roles within their clubs. Others are mentoring junior female umpires. Some are working with committees on “Women’s day” events, whilst others have helped HV in running the GirlZ Just Wanna Have Fun Series.

• Matthew Scholes who delivered a “Positive Coaching Workshop”
• Kate Vrljic who delivered a session on basic project management principles and
• Jess Jacobson from Oak Tree Foundation that focussed on basic presentation principles.
The girls also spent time learning first aid and basic strapping, and joined in the fun and activities of the Active After School Communities training program.
