MelbourneWNBL Frontpage News

It's been a big season at Boomerland - here's the season wrap.

Well, it's certainly been the biggest year of WNBL basketball at the Boomers for many a year, if not ever.

In a somewhat bittersweet ending to the season, our girls made their first ever WNBL Grand Final but went down to the Canberra Capitals by 3 lousy points 58 - 61.

And it will always be a little bit of "what might have been" for the Boomers, given that star forward Shelley Hammonds had been injured in Round 18 and could only cheer on from the sidelines for the entire finals series.

But as they say, that's sport and that's basketball.

And we certainly recognise the fantastic efforts of the rest of the team in stepping up to cover the loss of Shelley on the court, especially the likes of Zoe Carr and Anna Crosswhite. As Coach Cheryl Chambers has been saying all season "our strength this year is our teamwork" and that shone out in spades during the finals series.

So to the whole team - well done girls, fantastic season, bad luck the roll just did not go our way in those last couple of minutes of the Grand Final.

We also congratulate again our individual award winners from the WNBL awards for the season:

Cheryl Chambers - WNBL Coach of the Year (second award)
Sharin Milner - Golden Hands Award (third award)
Lisa Pardon - Best 3 Point Shooting Percentage

A special congrats to Lisa in her first season at the Boomers - the best 3 pointer shooter in the competition - fantastic achievement.

The Club also held its presentation night on Saturday night at the Veneto Club to congratulate the whole team on their achievements for the season and in particular recognise the following Club award winners:

Katrina Hibbert - Club Award
Shelley Hammonds - Runner up MVP
Sharin Milner - Most Valuable Player

On a sad note for the whole team, we say farewell to Katrina "Froggy" Hibbert who officially announced her retirement from WNBL basketball at the final home and away game against Townsville. Froggy is a two time WNBL MVP winner and has been a mainstay at Bulleen over many seasons. After a couple of years overseas, Froggy came back to the Boomers for one last tilt at a title this season - and oh so close !

From all of us at the Club Froggy, thanks for your fantastic contribution to our program over the years - best wishes for future endeavours.

And finally, a special thanks to all our volunteers who have helped out during the year to get our team on the court - your support has been invaluable and an important part of the team's success this season.

And thanks also to our many sponsors and also WNBL Boomers members who provide much needed financial support to the program.

To all Boomers fans - it was great seeing the Ven packed for pretty much every home game this season ... the girls valued your support and we saw some great games this season. The final home game against Townsville will certainly go down as one of the great WNBL games at the Ven.
